CONTRACT GRADING

Contract Grading
Your grade will determined using a method of evaluation called “contract grading.” At the beginning of the semester, you will have a choice of two contracts, which stipulate the work required to earn a minimum guaranteed final grade.
You will sign the contract that most closely aligns with the grade you intend to work toward; I will communicate with you at mid-semester, letting you know if you are “on track” or “not on track” to earn the grade you have contracted for. Additionally, you’re welcome to set up an appointment to confer with me.
The contract for a “B” (3.0) is as follows:

  • * Attend class regularly, not missing more than two classes during the semester.
  • * Complete all reading and homework assignments and papers. This criterion will be assessed through self- reports, “exit” notes, and faculty observation.
  • * Make a thoughtful attempt to articulate your “values, commitments and philosophy” and write a “final integrative learning” paper that combines first-person insights with second and third-person inquiry. Read the directions for these assignments carefully and meet the criteria articulated.
  • * Contribute positively to the learning community through active class participation, such as speaking up during class discussions, preparing for your oral presentations, participating in group activities, etc.
  • * Provide evidence of sustained, timely, and thoughtful attention to the assignments. A rubric for assessment will be provided.
  • * Meet due dates for the major written assignments.
To earn an “A,” in addition to the requirements above, the major written and oral assignments must meet the “very good” to “excellent” criteria, as articulated in the rubrics provided. Every class session will provide ample opportunities for class participation. If you are between letter grades at the end of the semester, consistent well-informed class participation will raise your final class grade as much as 1/3 letter grade.

Students who want to contract for a “C,” please contact me individually.
To earn a “D” or an “F”— Miss more than 3 classes; do not turn in one or both of the major assignments.
