Monday, Apr. 30 - Introduction to course and participants
Goals for today:
- Introduce faculty and discuss their areas of expertise
- Meet everyone in the class and discuss individual goals for the course
- Discuss the relationship between science and art
- Show projects from previous classes and workshops
- Discuss course goals
- Demo/Discussion of Art Materials: recommended materials for study projects are drawing, watercolor, collage
- Show available materials and give list of required art materials

Wednesday, May 2 - Fundamentals of Art
Goals for today:
- Learn about the fundamentals of Art
- Lecture: Art, Science & The Cosmic Connection
- Project - geological processes on 4 quadrants
- Visit Campus Art Museum (note that the museum opens at 1 pm, so today's class will begin at 10 am and run until 2 pm)

- Pick at least 4 spacecraft images (at least one from Io and one from another outer solar system satellite), be prepared to present the images and discuss where the image came from (which spacecraft), what geologic features are shown, how they formed, and why the forms are interesting to you artistically. Make sure images are of solid geological surfaces and not atmospheres.
- Pick at least one piece of art (preferably Monica's or a previous student's) inspired by geologic forms. Be prepared to describe the geology depicted in the image.
- E-mail all chosen images to the instructors by 6 am on Thursday, May 3.

- Learn about the geologic landforms on outer planet satellites
- Learn about Io's geologic history
- Present and discuss planetary images
- Critique geo project

Goals for today:
- Lecture Notes
Assignments:
- Pick out at least 2 more planetary images to add to your previous 4. You will use these for inspiration for your study projects. At least one must be in black&white and at least one must be in color. Bring to class tomorrow. Write one paragraph about the geology of each image. Send in an e-mail to the professor with the text and images by 9:30 am on Tuesday, May 8th.
Tuesday, May 8 - Study projects
Goals for today:
- Study Projects are a way to experiment with artistic forms on a small scale. They allow you to practice different techniques.
Assignments:
- Read the following:
  - Introduction to Geologic Mapping
  - An introduction to geologic mapping
  - Check out this geologic map of California
  - Take a look the geologic map of Io and compare it to some global images of Io
  - An article about a geologic map of Ganymede, compare to a global mosaic of ganymede
- Additional recommended reading:
  - Meeting Challenges with Geologic Maps
  - A book chapter about planetary geologic mapping
  - Pick another Galilean satellite (or piece of one) and compare its geologic map to its global mosaic
  - For geologic maps of major bodies in the solar system, see "The Compact Atlas of the Solar System" by Ronald Greeley and Raymond Batson (see instructor)

Monday, May 14 - Critique of study projects
Goals for today:
- Each student presents study projects and inspirational images. Discusses subject, form, and content of each piece

- Write draft of an artists statement - due via e-mail by Tuesday, May 15th at 6 am.
Tuesday, May 15 - Field Trip Presentations
Goals for today:
- Students present photos and commentary about what they learned on their field trips and how that might be incorporated into a final project.
Assignments:
- Send a short, informal e-mail to both instructors describing your project ideas. Due Wednesday, May 16th by 6 am. This message must include a list of materials that will be used.
Wednesday, May 16 - Impact cratering

Thursday, May 17 - discuss final projects
Goals for today:
- Decide on a final project. Remember that the project consists of a piece of art inspired by planetary geology, a paper describing the inspirational geology, and an artists statement.
- Begin working on the project (either artwork, paper, or artist's statement)
Friday, May 18 - Work on final projects
Assignments:
- Send an outline and bibliography for your final project. This should give the instructors a good idea of what your final project will be and what the geologic inspiration is. It should be send as a microsoft word or pdf attachment to an email and is due Monday, May 21st at 6 am.

Thursday, May 24 - Display/critique of final projects
- Completed final projects are due today at 9:30 am. Late final projects or late to the critique will result in failure of the course.
