Title: The Mathematics of Earthquake Forecasting
Project explores how the mathematical disciplines of differential
equations and probability theory are used in the uncertain world of
earthquake forecasting.
3) Student: Fidler, Michael (Mike)
Title: Mathematical Modeling of City Growth
Various models of city growth, along with a computer program
implementing one of them, are presented. The models make use of the
mathematical ideas of self-avoiding random walks and fractals.
4) Student: Firkins, Jennifer
Title: n-Person Game Theory
Game theory is a relatively new area of mathematics which involves
developing strategies for winning various games. Since many of the games
represent economic situations, particular attention is paid to the amount of
collusion allowed between players.
5) Student: Giovannini, Art
Title: Public-Key Cryptography
An exploration of the mathematics of secrecy systems, particularly the
public-key encryption system as it actually is used by financial institutions
today.
6) Student: Kapferer, Robert (Rob)
Title: The Mathematics of Health Care Costs
Project presents mathematical models (functions) describing the
operating costs of hospitals, and uses mathematical tools to minimize the
costs predicted by each model.
7) Student: Vega, Jose
Title: To Serve or not to Serve?
Project provides mathematical analysis of whether or not it is
advantageous to serve first in games in which one player serves first. Other such game situations are analyzed mathematically as well.
